Privacy Policy
This page says what newsdeck.dev keeps about you, why, where, and for how long. In short: you can use it without an account, and if you make one we keep only what we need to run it. No ads, no tracking, and we never sell data.
Who runs newsdeck.dev
newsdeck.dev is run by Michael Cheng, in Spain. For anything about your data, write to hello@newsdeck.dev.
Without an account
You can read everything without signing in. Your layout, sources, settings and saved stories then stay in your own browser (its local storage). We don't receive them.
What we keep when you sign in
You sign in with Google or GitHub. We don't use passwords. We keep:
- From Google or GitHub: which one you used, your email address, your display name, the address of your profile picture, and your account ID there.
- Sessions: a random session ID and when it ends. We don't keep your IP address or the name of your browser.
- Saved stories: a copy of each story you save (title, link, picture, source, date, author and short summary), so it stays even after it leaves the feed.
- Collections: their names and which saved stories are in each.
- Your setup: your sources, layout and columns, type filter, theme, Reader view options and whether details are shown.
We don't keep the access keys Google or GitHub send when you sign in.
Why
Only to run your account: to show your saved stories, collections and setup on every device you use. The legal basis is the service you ask for (GDPR article 6(1)(b)).
Where it is kept
The site runs on Vercel (servers in the United States and the European Union). Account data is stored in a Postgres database at Neon. Both work for us as data processors. Vercel also keeps its own short-lived logs of web requests, which include IP addresses.
How long
- Your account and everything in it: until you delete your account.
- Sessions: 30 days, renewed while you keep using the site.
- Story history (older posts from the sources, so columns go further back): this is public content, not personal data. We keep it for up to 12 months.
Cookies
Only the ones needed to sign in: a session cookie (30 days) and a short-lived cookie while you sign in with Google or GitHub. No advertising or analytics cookies, and no tracking.
When you sign in from the iPhone app, we use a one-time code that we keep for at most 2 minutes and delete as soon as it is used, and the app keeps its sign-in token in your iPhone’s Keychain.
Other sites your browser talks to
To show the page, your browser loads fonts from Google Fonts, small site icons from Google's icon service, pictures from the source websites, and your profile picture from Google or GitHub. These sites see your IP address, like any site you visit. Opening a story takes you to its own site.
Your rights
- See your data: Settings → “Download my data” gives you a file with everything in your account.
- Delete your data: Settings → “Delete account” deletes your account and all its data right away.
- You can also ask us to correct your data, object to how we use it, or limit it, by writing to hello@newsdeck.dev.
- You can complain to the Spanish data protection authority, the AEPD (aepd.es).
